Summer Session 2006
This summer tour 2006 The World Orchestra reinforced furthermore its commitment as UNESCO Artist for Peace. The concerts in Cyprus became a shout for understanding, interculturality, equality and cooperation between countries. The first concert in the island was in the Strovolos Municipal Theatre of Nicosia, the last divided capital city in Europe.
After this successful concert the orchestra and Principal Conductor Josep Vicent travelled to Limassol, coinciding with the massive arrival of people directly affected by the armed conflict between Israel and the Lebanon. In the middle of that chaotic ambient, The World Orchestra performed a concert in Limassol’s Heroes Square dedicated to all the refugees from Lebanon. It was a magical concert where the emotion of the audience could be felt and everybody ended up dancing to the music of The World Orchestra with maestro Vicent performing Ginastera’s Malambo.
But WOJM’s commitment with Peace was also shown in Barcelona’s GREC Festival on the 17th of July. This concert had a very special meaning, as at the festival’s request the orchestra performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a piece that composer and cellist Pau Casals planned to perform in 1936 and had to be cancelled because of the start of the Spanish Civil War. Now, seventy years later, WOJM with guest conductor Yaron Traub performed in this same magical space a piece whose last movement, the famous Ode to Joy, has become Europe’s anthem. The concert was a homage to those who lived this tragedy in person. With a Sold Out Teatre Grec, WOJM concert was attended by many personalities of Spanish Culture and politics, it had a big media impact and was also attended by JMI and WOJM President Mr. Pierre Goulet.
Besides numerous concerts in Spain, WOJM made a CD recording for COLUMNA MUSICA with the opera overtures of Martín I Soler, a Valencian composer from the 18th century who achieved a huge success in Vienna (2006 is the bicentenary of his death)
The repertoire included as in past tours the world première of a piece specially written for the tour. In this case it was Ketsana by French composer Emmanuel Séjourné. Capriccio Espagnol de Nikolai Rimsky - Korsakov and Symphony Nº. 9, "From the New World " by Antonín Dvořák were the other pieces that completed the program.
The end of the adventure took place once more in Sagunt International Festival. It was also there where The World Chamber Orchestra of Jeunesses Musicales performed the music-coreografic production Lacrimosa Dies Illa, in which they played Mozart’s Requiem and Ave Verum with a contemporary ballet, music and film production.
